During Jesus’ trial, Peter was afraid and pretended that he did not know Jesus. When confronted with his betrayal, he was bitterly disappointed in himself.

Just then a cock crowed, and Peter remembered what Jesus had told him: “Before the cock crows, you will say three times that you do not know me.” He went out and wept bitterly. Matthew 26:74b-75

Maybe you also feel disappointed in yourself sometimes.

At times, it can feel as if you’re good for nothing and deserve nothing in life. You feel so inferior.  Mephibosheth, who was crippled as the result of an accident when he was a small child, felt this way.

When Mephibosheth, the son of Jonathan and grandson of Saul, arrived, he bowed down before David in respect. David said, “Mephibosheth,” and he answered, “At your service, sir.”  “Don’t be afraid,” David replied. “I will be kind to you for the sake of your father Jonathan. I will give you back all the land that belonged to your grandfather Saul, and you will always be welcome at my table.” Mephibosheth bowed again and said, “I am no better than a dead dog, sir! Why should you be so good to me?” 2 Samuel 9:6-8

Yet, the poet of Psalm 139 helps him to realise that he need not feel inferior. Read Psalm 139, especially from verse 13.

You created every part of me;

you put me together in my mother’s womb.

I praise you because you are to be feared;

all you do is strange and wonderful.

I know it with all my heart.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for creating me in a miraculous way and that you knew me even before I was born. I give you thanks and praise. Amen
