Do you love Jesus? - 29 August 2014

The third time he said to him, ‘Simon son of John, do you love me?’ Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, ‘Do you love me?’ He said, ‘Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.’ Jesus said, ‘Feed my sheep. John 21:17
To eat with someone was very important during the time that Jesus lived on earth. Sharing a meal was indicative of being part of the community. People, who had a good relationship with each other, ate together. Jesus makes a point of eating with sinners and tax collectors and in so doing shows something of God's gracious attitude. Before the crucifixion, Jesus also ate for the last time the Passover meal with the disciples.
Now after the resurrection Jesus again eats with his disciples. Once again he showed he was the host by breaking the bread. Jesus shows in that way that his relationship with the disciples has been restored. Although they left him in the lurch and fled when he was in trouble, he comes to live in communion with them again.
Even Peter, who denied him three times, receives the opportunity to three times affirm his faith and love, even though he may not have understood what was happening. Peter was given the instruction to feed and care for Jesus' flock; this is the way in which he can show his love for Jesus.
We all stumble and sometimes fall, but God restores the relationship with us through Jesus Christ. God wants to live in fellowship with us. He wants to be part of all our lives, where we work, play or eat. God’s love which bridges the borders between us and him also makes it possible for us to answer in love.
We can also show our love for the Lord by looking after, being good to and caring for other people.
Prayer: Almighty God, we thank you that through Jesus Christ you want to live in communion with us. Thank you that you do not leave us to our own devices, but that your love bridges the boundaries between us. Help us to respond with gratitude to your grace and to love you in return with our whole heart, mind and all our strength. Grant that we will show your love to other people. Amen
