With God you can face a troop
Carina Francke
Ps 18:29, "For by you I can run against a troop, by my God I can leap over a wall."
1 Joh 4:4,"You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world."
When I read these verses I picture a stout-hearted three year old boy holding his father or brother's hand, ready to sort out a few bullies. Needless to say it is not the boy who will win the fight, but the presence of his dad or older brother that gives him the courage to try such a stunt.
If sinful people makes life difficult for the believer it hurts and angers, but when fellow believers, family or friends engage in this kind of behavior it cuts much deeper. But don't despair - you are in good company! Paul's coworker Demas deserted him and the church in Corinth questioned his integrity. David had to flee from his son Absalom; when he sinned and became sick, his own familiar friend in whom he trusted, lifted up his heel against him. (Ps41:10). Jesus was despised by His own people and his disciples denied that they were his followers by abandoning Him in his hour of need.
What do we do if these kind of things come our way? Firstly remember,"You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world."(1 John 4:4). Yes, God is with us always - we are His temple in whom He lives and amongst whom He dwells. He is our God and Father and we are His people and children. (2 Corinthians 6:16-18). For this very reason we can and must handle these things in a "Jesus way." Differently said, we must have the mind of Christ.
Secondly you have to realize that He is on your side. You are never alone, whatever the circumstances might be. Like that little boy you can trustfully put your hand in His hand - with Him at your side you form a united front against any storming troop!
Prayer: Father sometimes I fear when I focus on people and circumstances around me. Today I decide to believe what your Word teaches: You will always be with me. For this reason I choose to put my trust and faith in You! Amen.
