The Lord's Prayer (9)
Quintus Heine
Matthew 6:13 "But deliver us from the evil one."
The word "evil" is talking about a fallen angel. He set himself against God and his followers (Revelation 12:9). He is the roaring lion who seeks to tear us apart (1 Peter 5:8). He is Satan, the accuser of the believer. This evil one disguises himself so that we do not see him. He even misquotes the Bible and tries to seduce us and convince us that the world and its pleasures and sin are not so bad after all. We become accustomed to impurity and ungodliness. Worldly success, power and greed are a great attraction for many people.
Jesus teaches us to pray to be delivered from evil; that God will deliver and will keep us from his power over our lives. This prayer is an urgent cry for God to set us free and protect us.
Victory of Christ: This prayer also wants to make us aware that Christ has won the victory on the cross and that he will protect us from the attacks of evil. He doesn't leave us alone in the fight against evil. Christ has already conquered Satan and his followers on the cross! We must believe this and trust the Lord to help us each day. In this prayer we pray specifically for the protection of the Lord. We must believe that God has already defeated Satan on the cross and that Satan cannot have a hold on a Christian (1 John 4:4-5). We must believe the positive message of freedom and life. Do not let negative thoughts about sin and evil dominate you. Be positive and grateful for the victory of Christ, ask him daily to protect you and your loved ones (Ephesians 7:10-18).
God help us to be awake and to detect the onslaught of the enemy every day. Encourage us to know that you will protect us against all evil.
Prayer: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.
