The Holy Spirit at work
Hennie Symington
The raging ocean that covered everything was engulfed in total darkness, and the Spirit of God was moving over the water. Genesis 1:2
Then he breathed on them and said, ”Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive people's sins, they are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.” John 20:22-23
The Holy Spirit now and for evermore
Shortly we will be celebrating Pentecost when we celebrate the pouring out of the Holy Spirit. Yet the Holy Spirit , was present from the very beginning of creation and will be until the end of time. His work is ongoing, not only in creation but also in our lives, often without our even knowing.
The Holy Spirit at work in my life
The Spirit witnesses about Jesus and makes us aware of what God has in mind for us.
He leads us in various ways:
- The Spirit works mainly through the Scriptures. The more you immerse yourself in the Scriptures, the more aware you become of the work of the Spirit in you. Without the work of the Holy Spirit the Bible would be lifeless ink on paper.
- He works through circumstances, creating new opportunities while closing chapters in our lives so that we can move on to greater things.
- He works through other believers to bring new insight.
- He leads us through prayer. The Holy Spirit gives us inner peace when praying over certain matters. This is not necessarily an intellectual peace but a confidence that you are on the right path.
- He leads us in various ways. Sometimes he uses a sermon, a song or someone’s witness or even a good deed, a relationship with someone, or a struggle of conscience, a steady series of changes, a mountain top experience or a little voice in you heart.
Be warned!
The Holy Spirit is not at your beck and call. He works by order of the Father only. He doesn’t appear on your screen with the click of a mouse whenever you have need of him. The Spirit blows where it wills and does his work in godly wisdom and knowledge.
Prayer for today
I thank you Spirit of God, whose invisible presence makes God visible in my life.
