Verse-a-day 23 April 2013
A flood of words
Hennie Symington
In the beginning the Word already existed; the Word was with God, and the Word was God. From the very beginning the Word was with God. John 1:1-2
The gift of words
Words are wonderful. They endow us with divine ability to string words together to form thoughts.
Words are like rivers flowing over vales and hill, and sometimes overflowing with meaning. Words are like matches that can light fires which are difficult to extinguish.
Words are a breath on the wind which blows where it wills.
Words soothe, words cut. Words hurt. But if you choose your words wisely they can touch the soul.
Idle words
So often we use words carelessly without realising the immense might of words. It was through the word that God created the universe. In Genesis 1:3 where we read:
Then God said: “Let there be light” and there was light, he not only spoke, but also gave a name to that which he created. That ability was given to mankind also with the command to name everything in paradise.
In John 1 we read that the miracle of the Word existed from the beginning. And that the Word was God himself. Without the gift of words we would not be human. Without words we would be unable to know or recognise God. God willed it in this way. Language makes us divine creatures who no only understand that there is a God, but that we are able to speak to him also.
Count your words
Be very aware of the power of words. Realise that you too can create with words. Words can call into existence good or evil. Words can make or break. Speak therefore as if you are speaking to God and his creation and not idle words with no regard for consequences of your words.
Prayer for today
Lord, please help me to count my words that I can give an account of what I created through my words.
