“Christ Recrucified”
Hennie Symington
For just as all people die because of their union with Adam, in the same way all will be raised to life because of their union with Christ. But each one will be raised in the right order: Christ, first of all; then, at the time of his coming, those who belong to him. 1 Corinthians 15:20-22
When pain and suffering become our daily portion
The Greek author Nikos Kazantzakis once wrote a book with the title quoted above in which he shows that Christ’s suffering did not come to an end 2000 years ago. The “stations of the cross” now line our streets, our cities, our hospitals, our townships, our suburbs and our homes where He is crucified over and over again by the evil that lives in the heart of man. The daily newspaper and CNN tell it like it is.
Aftershocks of the Fall
Looking at the suffering all around, you realise the full implications of Adam and Eve’s act of disobedience. On that day, whether you believe it literally or not, man worked his own destruction. And God knows there was no other option than to send his Son to give us a second chance of life. But the battle isn’t over as evil fights back with everything in its power, regardless of the destruction it leaves in its wake. Our consolation is that the victory is in God's hands. But the aftershocks of the “fall” will continue to be felt until the end of time when God will be all in everything and in everyone.
Daily prayer:
Lord, you are my Saviour and my hope for a better world. Help me to see goodness and mercy and make your light to shine upon me wherever I go.
