“And why worry about clothes? Look how the wild flowers grow: they do not work or make clothes for themselves. But I tell you that not even King Solomon with all his wealth had clothes as beautiful as one of these flowers.” Matthew 6:28-29, GNT

When I read this passage in Matthew 6, I see, in my mind’s eye, the cosmos beginning to bloom in the Highveld at this time of year. All along the road, you see the floral splendour in shades of white and pink.

Every year, I look forward to August and September, because then it is bright yellow canola fields and delicate flowers that beautify the hills here in the Cape. That is also when the pincushion proteas start to bloom.

We must never forget that a colourful spectacle of flowers is God’s handiwork. Next time, take the time to look at the simple flowers that liven up the landscape. No, don’t just look, make sure you see. And then, remember how Jesus came to explain God’s promise to us in a practical, understandable way with this example. God will take care of you. God knows exactly what we need and he will take care of us, just as he takes care of the flowers in the field.

Prayer: Father, thank you for the beautiful wildflowers along the road. When I see the flowers, help me remember that you are all powerful, that you know me and that you will make sure I have enough. Amen
