Gifts of the Godhead to Believers

Carina Francke

“There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work.” 1 Corinthians 12:4-6

The Triune God we worship and serve overloads us with goodness and mercy. We may call him Father, address his Son as our Saviour and embrace the Holy Spirit as our Comforter. Their gifts to us as believers enable us as the church to serve and fulfil our role as “Ones Sent” effectively.

Gifts of God the Father
The Father is a giving God. He gives life to you. You were formed from dust and then He breathed the breath of life into your human existence (Genesis 2:7). You were a part of his plan when you were born! He also gave his only begotten Son, the heartbeat of his gifts, to you and me. He is the Redeemer of fallen mankind. (John 3:16)

In addition to all this, He adds gifts of grace so that we can live meaningful lives by serving one another. In Romans 12:6-8,the gifts are listed: prophesying, ministry, teaching, exhortation, giving, leading, mercy. And if you do not know what your gift is yet, ask Him to lead you and give you insight. But remember, then you sign up to serve.

The gifts Jesus give
Redemption-wise, Jesus is the giver of eternal life to me and you. (John 5:38-40) He gained that privilege by giving his life and shedding his blood for us so that we can live. (John 10:17-18)

He gave gifts of ministry (“gifts of office”) to the church after his ascension - apostles, prophets, teachers, evangelists, and pastors. (Ephesians 4:11-12) To do what? To prepare God’s people for works of service. Yes, He uses people, including you and me to do these works. Where do you fit in?

The Gifts of the Holy Spirit were collectively given by the Father and the Son. (Acts 2:33)

The Holy Spirit gives gifts to believers as He deems fit, but the workings (manifestations) of the Spirit are available to every believer. It brings the body of the church together and strengthens them when they get together. (Spirit Filled Life Bible, p2023) Has someone ever given you a message of wisdom or knowledge? Are you familiar with the gift of healing and the distinguishing between spirits? No?

Read about these gifts in 1 Corinthians 12:7-11.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you for using insignificant, imperfect people to continue your work on earth, empowering us with the power of your Spirit. If anyone lacks zeal for your gifts, won’t you please convince them of the reality of your spiritual gifts? Amen.
