Going Home - Part II

Neville Turley

They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them.  “Men of Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand here looking into the sky?  This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way as you have seen him go into heaven.”

Acts 1:10-11 (NIV)

That message still applies to us today. Jesus is coming back. The disciples realized there was work to do. The Bible tells us they returned to Jerusalem and went upstairs to the room where they were staying.  Acts 1:12-13

The Bible does not say for certain whether this was the same upper room where they had eaten the last supper and where the disciples had locked themselves in for fear of the Jews, after the death of Jesus. If it was the room, it must have conjured up beautiful memories. For that was where the resurrected Jesus had said to them; “Peace be with you” and where doubting Thomas had felt the wounds on Jesus and said. “My Lord and my God.”

The venue is not important, what is vital is what the disciples did. They prayed harmoniously and constantly, together with the women, Mary, the mother of Jesus, and his brothers to be empowered by the Holy Spirit.

It is important that we should follow their example and pray that we too receive the gift of God and be empowered by the Holy Spirit to be witnesses to our Lord Jesus Christ.  Jesus has risen from the dead and he will return to earth again.  Meanwhile his followers, you and me, have work to do.

Prayer: Almighty God, may we, unworthy as we are, be empowered by the Holy Spirit to share with others the story of your wondrous love. For Jesus sake. Amen
