… so, Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin, but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him. ... For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are sanctified.” Hebrews 9:26; 10:14

Jesus is anointed as the Prophet and Priest who will bring God’s message to the people of God. Whereas the priests of old brought a sacrificial animal as a sign of reconciliation between God and mankind, Christ offers himself as the sacrifice reconciling God and sinners for all times.

The enigma that is Jesus Christ continues to engage our hearts and minds. When we speak of Jesus we think of him as a human being such as us, the carpenter’s son who came to live among us, eat with us and walk with us and whose robe we could touch. But when the name Christ enters the picture he becomes more than. He is also the Messiah and the Anointed one. Furthermore, when we learn that He is the only begotten Son of God the mystery deepens. The question is, do we need to understand this to believe?

If Jesus is our Lord, He is our master and the one whom we serve. He is Lord over every aspect of our lives. In Romans 1:1 Paul goes so far as to call himself a servant (in Greek the word for slave is used)of Jesus Christ implying that Christ is our Lord and master. No earthly ruler can claim the same. At the same time, we rejoice in this “slavery” or servanthood, because it is tempered by love and utter joy and freedom.

Prayer: God, how amazing that the extraordinary could come to us as the ordinary, to die for us, in order to raise us up as children of the living God. Amen
