The Lord looks down from heaven; he sees all humankind. Psalm 33:13

Your will be done, on earth, as it is in heaven … Matthew 6:10

Where is heaven? Is it a place, is it a state of mind? At times it refers to the air or sky, and often as the place where God resides. Speaking in human terms, we could describe heaven as God’s workshop. It’s the place from where Jesus was sent, and to where he returns. It is also the place from which God’s redemption work emanates. However, regardless of how heaven is depicted in the Word, heaven is a very specific place where God is all in and where his will is done.

How does heaven apply to us as believers? Do we have a stake in heaven during our time on earth? Indeed, the kingdom of heaven is among us, as Jesus so often said during his time on earth. Jesus warns time and time again that the kingdom of heaven is near and that we should repent. Near means among us. Close to us. We are urged time and again to act and be as “it is in heaven”. Through our actions of love, goodness, mercy, forgiveness and holiness we create heaven on earth. That is what God wants of us.

Prayer: Lord, make us understand that heaven isn’t some faraway place, but that the kingdom is present in and among us. Let us live our lives as pilgrims travelling through your kingdom day by day. Amen
