“We know that we have come to know him if we keep his commands. Whoever says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person. But if anyone obeys his word, love for God is truly made complete in them. This is how we know we are in him: Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did.”  1 John 2:3-6 (NIV)

Walking in the footsteps of Jesus means applying the standards he set to our every day living. It means living in the knowledge that we are not worshipping a dead Christ but a risen Saviour.  The Lord Jesus is a present, living reality.

In the 90s, a youth group from the Calvary Reformed Church of Holland in Michigan, USA began a campaign in their community under the slogan of “What would Jesus do?”  They wanted to make Christ part of everyone’s daily life.

To focus attention on their outreach, they made cloth arm bracelets bearing the initials WWJD. Their idea was a hit both in America and in many Christian communities throughout the world.

Believers when faced with difficult choices were urged before making a decision to consider what Jesus would have done if he had been in their place.

The question – What would Jesus do? – is not new. It has been posed since the beginning of the Christian era 2000 years ago. It can however only be answered by those who are in a right relationship with God.

Our Bible verses today tells us how to determine our standing with God. The text is straight forward. Are we obeying God’s commands? If so, we are in union with God.

John states that whoever takes God’s message to heart, in that person the love of God has been made perfect.

Jesus said; “If you love me, keep my commands.” (John 14:15) Let us show our love for him by walking in his footsteps.

Prayer: Almighty God, we praise and glorify you, the God of our salvation. Transform us through the Holy Spirit that our daily lives reflect our love for you. This we ask in Jesus name. Amen
